If you’re an internationally qualified Occupational Therapist (OT) looking to work in Australia, the registration process has recently changed.
The good news? The pathway is now more streamlined – but it’s still important to understand each step clearly to avoid delays.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process to become a registered Occupational Therapist in Australia, based on the latest updates from the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (OTBA) and AHPRA.
Step 1: Understand who you need to apply to
Before anything else, it’s important to know:
- You must be registered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) to work as an OT in Australia
- You cannot legally use the title “Occupational Therapist” without registration
As of October 2025, the Occupational Therapy Council (OTC) no longer assesses qualifications for registration.
Step 2: Submit your qualification assessment to AHPRA
This is your first official step. You’ll need to apply to AHPRA and submit:
- Your degree certificate
- Academic transcripts
- Proof of identity
- English language test results (if required)
AHPRA will assess whether your qualification meets Australian standards.
This replaces the old “Stage 1 desktop assessment”.
Step 3: Receive your assessment outcome
After reviewing your application, AHPRA will give you one of three outcomes:
- Substantially equivalent
- Your qualification matches Australian standards
- You can move directly toward registration
- Relevant but not equivalent
- Your qualification is acceptable but not fully aligned
- You’ll need further assessment (see Step 4)
- Not relevant
- Unfortunately, you won’t be eligible to continue the registration pathway
Step 4: Complete supervised practice (if required)
f your qualification is not fully equivalent, you’ll need to complete a competence assessment pathway.
This involves:
- Applying for limited registration
- Working under supervision in Australia
- Completing a formal competence assessment
This assessment typically takes place over a period of supervised practice (around 6 months)
This step is only required for some candidates – not everyone.
Step 5: Apply for general registration
Once you’ve:
- Passed your qualification assessment
- Completed supervised practice (if required)
You can apply for general registration with AHPRA.
To be approved, you must also meet standard requirements such as:
- English language proficiency
- Professional indemnity insurance
- Criminal history checks
- Recency of practice
Step 6: Meet ongoing registration requirements
After registration, you may need to complete additional requirements such as:
- Continuing professional development (CPD)
- Cultural safety or responsiveness training (if applicable)
These ensure you can practise safely within the Australian healthcare system.
This new system is designed to be more efficient and aligned with other healthcare professions in Australia.
The process can feel overwhelming at first but once you break it down, it’s actually quite structured.
At Mediix, we regularly support international OTs through this process and help connect them with employers who can assist with supervision or sponsorship if needed.
